While volunteering with the Haitian Student Organization mentor-ship program I have learned tremendously about my own culture while mentoring other to be proud of their own culture. It is extremely important to teach young Haitian student about their culture and to show them that there is nothing to ashamed about. Learning to accept your race or culture is a great way to help students to gain confidence in themselves and race. Though this program I have gain a new level of respect and sense of pride about being Haitian-American. I never would be the first one to say that I am a Haitian-American, but now I am the first and is not ashamed to teach others about my culture. This mentor program was the first year and it has shown great potential to grow into an amazing program for not only Haitian-American students but for all multiracial Americans. It will also become a platform for other programs to embrace their culture and to mentor the youth in today's society that being multicultural is the best of both worlds, not a burden. This program has not only helped with the children's growth but also, my own.
